My name is Graham Clark. I am a freelance editor living in Portland, Oregon. I do developmental, line, and copy editing of both fiction and non-fiction. I am particularly interested in texts relating to history, politics, travel, and science fiction.

I have a keen eye for analyzing text to see whether the various parts make sense and fit together well. In persuasive or expository pieces, this can mean looking at whether arguments make sense, whether the information supports the thesis, or whether more information is needed. In fiction pieces, this involves looking at the elements of the plot and whether they add up to a coherent story. Does your protagonist have a believable motivation? Is the story set in an immersive world? Does the ending make sense? What can be done to improve these aspects of the story? These are the questions I address as I read your text.

Of course, if you are content with those aspects of your story, I have a passion for the smaller details as well. Where to break paragraphs, how to cut down the word count, and when to use a semicolon are all issues that I address with rigor. A few extra words added or cut can often make prose much stronger; I will help you find those words.

I have a certificate in editing from the University of Washington. This course was taught by expert editors and covered every aspect of the field. I am also a proud member of the Northwest Editors Guild.

If you haven’t worked with a professional editor before, I will happily explain the editorial process to you and do a free sample edit of a few pages of text so that you know what service you are interested in. From there, we can come up with an editorial plan tailored to your needs. I hope you get in touch, and I look forward to seeing your writing!
